Taking good outfit pictures is not as easy as it might sound. If you're not an professional photographer, you'll need a lot of practice and patience! Continue reading to find out 10 fashion photography tips every fashion blogger should know.
10 FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY TIPS
1. LIGHTING IS KEY!
One thing I've definitely learned throughout the years is that lighting is basically the most important thing when it comes to fashion photography! You can have the best equipment, but when the lighting is sh*t- you're not going to have great results. So, always choose places where it's natural bright and light and no tiny little streets with lots of dark corners.
2. CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOCATION
The location is another thing which can get quite hard to figure out. Especially at the beginning. You will notice that some locations you might love or think look great are actually not that great when shooting fashion pictures. You simply need to try out a lot of different locations and collect your favorite ones. It's always great to have two to three locations you know that always work!
3. GET GOOD CAMERA EQUIPMENT
If you've found a great location with perfect lighting it's up to your camera equipment if the pictures will turn out good or bad. Of course you don't need a super duper expensive camera, especially not in the beginning. If you can afford it, great! Then go for it! But if you're on a budget, definitely do some research of great affordable camera equipment for fashion photography. I personally love Nikon- they have a huge range from affordable to really expensive. So there's something for everyone.
4. DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE GETTING THE CAMERA
Now, this is one thing I've learned in the past! Definitely do a lot of research and talk to some professionals in a camera equipment store. Tell them what you're planning to do and what you need and they will advice you to the best product! Don't just order something online you think is great.
5. GET A LENS HOOD!
If you're having a reflex camera, definitely go for a lens hood as well. They're not expensive but do great input on your pictures!
6. FIND THE RIGHT ANGLES
You can totally play around with different angles and find out what works best for you. If you wanna look taller, tell your photographer to shoot the pictures in squatting position. This way you gonna look taller. If you want your legs look slimmer, the pictures should be shot more from above.
7. DON'T TRY TOO HARD TO POSE
This one can get really hard, especially in the beginning! It's just strange to try to pose in public... The best thing you can do though: Don't try too hard to pose. Let it all be natural! Walk some steps, move and just have fun! This way your photographer will catch the best moments in motion.
8. GET INSPIRATION!
You can never get too much inspiration! Getting inspired is so important in this industry. Look at your favorite models or bloggers online and on social media, get inspired of their outfits, hair and make-up, poses etc. but don't copy them! Try to do it in your own way.
9. GET FAMILIAR WITH A GOOD EDITING SOFTWARE
If you finally have the perfect shot, the next step would be to edit. There are so many editing softwares and apps out there which makes it quite hard to find the right one. I personally never used Photoshop just because I simply can't handle it, lol. If you want something to edit pictures for free- try out PicMonkey. If you're working on a Mac- you can try GreatPhotoPro. Or check out one of my previous articles where I was talking about how I edit my Instagram pictures.
10. DON'T TAKE IT ALL TOO SERIOUS! HAVE FUN!
I know this might be hard for perfectionists (just like me)... but trust me, it's no use when you take it too serious and bring yourself down if it doesn't work out the way you wanted it. It takes a lot of practice! Don't forget to have some fun!
